5. Use <select> sparingly

Select or pulldown menus require more user effort (cognitive load). They also are the single most visually distracting form element. Label the control inside and out (I want my money as:).

Note: it's a dropDOWN, not a dropUP. Put default <option selected> at the TOP, not bottom or middle.

<5 choices use radio buttons, >15 consider text box.
